Nigeria’s insecurity self-inflicted – Summit stakeholders

On January 9, 2013 · ABUJA—The common thread from stakeholders in the security services, including former Inspector-General of Police, Gambo Jimeta, at the opening of the Vanguard/Police National Security Summit in Abuja, yesterday, was that the state of insecurity in the country was self-inflicted.
They spoke at the national summit on Security Challenges in Nigeria jointly organised by Vanguard and the Nigeria Police, which commenced in Abuja yesterday.
The self-examination of the state of insecurity in the country, according to several dignitaries, is the culmination of the lack of concern shown the sector by past administrations.
The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar, on his part, asserted that the spate of insecurity could no longer be tolerated as he warned that it posed serious danger to the nation’s democracy.
The men and women of the Nigeria Police were, nevertheless hailed for their stellar performance in the face of logistic and bureaucratic challenges with former Inspector General of Police Gambo Jimeta drawing wild applause for his observation that many policemen in the frontline in the battle against terrorism have died unsung.

The palace of the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi has been gutted by fire.
The inferno razed down about 21 rooms of the ancient palace.
According to the Media Assistant of the monarch, Alhaji Azeez Fehintola, the fire started around 6am Wednesday  and razed uncontrollably before the arrival of fire fighters one hour later.
Immediately I got here and saw the extent of the damage done to the palace by this early morning conflagration, I could not but break down into tears. The fire, which broke out from electrical surge, started around 6 a.m and was contained after about three hours.
“The fire-fighters came at some minutes past seven and battled it till it was finally put out. Every part of the affected apartments were completely razed.

Katt Williams arrested in L.A. last night after blowing off a court date in Sacramento.
A judge issued a bench warrant for Katt's arrest yesterday when the comedian failed to show up for his arraignment, stemming from his wild 3-wheeled police chase.
He's been charged with evading a police officer while driving recklessly, a felony.
Law enforcement sources say the LAPD was aware Katt was a wanted man and when detectives spotted him outside his L.A. home, they placed him under arrest.
The fully cooperative Williams is being held on $100,500 bail.
